Value

Unit
perplexity_delta (WikiText-2-test ppl points, quantized minus FP16)
Model
Llama3.1-8B
Methodology
PTQ-with-microscaling-formats paper, Table 1, row 'A:MXINT8, W:MXINT4, Method AWQ+' - the + means GPTQ weight rounding is applied on top of AWQ. Model Llama3.1-8B, MX block size 128, all Linear layers transformed; GELU/Softmax/LayerNorm left in original format. AWQ calibration: 128 WikiText-2-train sequences of length 512, alpha grid search over [0,1) plus MSE-optimal clipping. Metric: WikiText-2 TEST perplexity. FP16 baseline 5.61; MXINT4-128 with AWQ+GPTQ scores 6.21.
Measured by

Reproducible
yes
notes
DELTA = +0.60 ppl (6.21 vs 5.61). IMPORTANT format_id caveat: the paper's MXINT4 is a signed 4-bit integer format with a shared power-of-two scale per 128-element block - it is NOT OCP MXFP4 (E2M1 elements + E8M0 scale) and NOT NVIDIA NVFP4 (E2M1 + per-block E4M3). format_id mxfp4 is the nearest existing record; do not read this number as an MXFP4 or NVFP4 quality delta without checking the mx-format definitions. The spread inside this same row is the point: RTN at A:MXINT8/W:MXINT4 scores 8.11 (+2.50) and SmoothQuant scores 8.86 (+3.25), while MXINT4 with no smoothing at A:INT8 scores 6.99. Same bit-width, same block size, same calibration set, same harness, same model - a 1.90 ppl spread driven purely by which PTQ algorithm ran. The paper's actual finding is the opposite of the folk one: MXINT beats per-channel fixed-point INT at equal width (e.g. A:MXINT8/W:MXINT4 AWQ+GPTQ 6.21 vs A:INT8/W:4 AWQ+GPTQ 6.39 on this model).
