Inferentia2 supports FP32, TF32, BF16, FP16, UINT8, and cFP8 (configurable FP8). Trainium2 adds FP8 at 1300 TFLOPS per chip. The auto-cast path takes FP32/FP16 models and casts down to BF16/FP8/cFP8 at compile time. Stochastic rounding is available to protect accuracy. The dtype choice directly affects throughput: FP8 is 2x FP16 on paper, but real speedup depends on the model and whether the compiler can effectively use the lower precision.
Scales with
precision (FP32 -> BF16 -> FP8, each step changes throughput)model_architecture (some models tolerate lower precision better)stochastic_rounding (accuracy protection at slight performance cost)auto_cast_vs_manual (auto-cast is easier but may not be optimal)
Workarounds
Use auto-casting for zero-code-change deployment (FP32->BF16)Use cFP8 for 2x throughput vs FP16 on Inferentia2/Trainium2Enable stochastic rounding for accuracy protectionUse manual precision control for maximum performanceProfile with Neuron Explorer to find optimal dtype configuration
notes
The dtype tradeoff is the primary performance knob for AWS Neuron. The auto-cast path is designed for productivity: 'Autocasting reduces time to market by removing the need for lower-precision retraining.' For maximum performance, manual FP8 configuration with stochastic rounding gives the best throughput but requires accuracy validation. The Neuron Explorer tool provides profiling and AI-powered recommendations for dtype and sharding configuration.
