Symptom
An RK3588 SBC ($80-200) bought to run a 7B-class open model technically loads one but is unusable: the vendor's own RKLLM w8a8 benchmark table shows ChatGLM3-6B — the largest model they even benchmark — already down to 4.98 tok/s decode, so a real 7B/8B lands ~3-4 tok/s.
Root cause
The RK3588 NPU is a 6 TOPS edge part and decode is memory-bandwidth bound. The measured curve falls off hard with size (Qwen2-0.5B 41.6 tok/s, Qwen2.5-1.5B 16.7, Phi3-3.8B 7.45, ChatGLM3-6B 4.98, all w8a8, 128-in/64-out), and a 7B w8a8 only just fits a 16GB board once weights plus KV are counted.
Workaround
Treat it as what it is: a fine sub-4B on-device assistant or VLM demo. Do not buy an RK3588 board expecting interactive 7B+ chat — for that goal a used GPU beats it by a wide margin.
notes
Vendor-measured numbers, not third-party. Verdict from the exotic-silicon sweep: TRAP for 7B+, legit edge toy below ~4B. The 4.98 tok/s ChatGLM3-6B row is recorded as comm-rk3588-chatglm3-6b-tg and comm-rk3588-chatglm3-6b-decode.
