Symptom
A used SXM2 or SXM4 module bought bare (V100 $349-800, A100 40GB $2,499) arrives with no cooler and no PCIe edge connector - it cannot be installed in a normal workstation slot. The listing photos look like a GPU but the part is electrically and mechanically a daughterboard for an HGX baseboard.
Root cause
SXM is a mezzanine module form factor: power, PCIe/NVLink and cooling all come through the HGX baseboard it bolts onto. The module alone is a paperweight. Third-party SXM2-to-PCIe and SXM4-to-PCIe adapters exist but add cost and risk - the SXM4 adapter market is grey-market with buyer-beware power delivery and firmware.
Workaround
Either budget for the carrier (OEM HGX-1 board for SXM2, or a SXM4 adapter at $648-1,200 which puts total-landed A100 40GB SXM at ~$3,150-3,700, still half the $6,995-8,074 PCIe card) or buy the native PCIe card instead (V100 PCIe ~$695-900, A100 PCIe) - the PCIe premium IS the carrier problem priced out. Sellers now ship 'module + PCIe adapter + fan' bundles at ~$200-340 over the bare module.
notes
This is the single most common trap in the used-datacenter slice: the SXM module's lower sticker is a form-factor discount, not a silicon discount. The price gap between A100 40GB SXM4 ($2,499) and A100 40GB PCIe (~$7,000) is almost entirely the baseboard problem. Same story on the cheaper end: V100 SXM2 vs PCIe. OAM parts (Gaudi 2 HL-225, MI250X) have the same trap with an even more expensive chassis (see gaudi2 OAM gotcha).
