Symptom
Operators expecting 5x-10x throughput gains on arbitrary dense 128K-context models by enabling sparse attention find that production engines (vLLM, SGLang) cannot enable NSA or MoBA on standard dense checkpoints (e.g. Llama-3.1, Qwen2.5), and that neither paper publishes multi-tenant serving throughput at 128K.
Root cause
Sparse attention mechanisms like NSA (DeepSeek, arXiv:2502.11089) and MoBA (Moonshot AI, arXiv:2502.13189) rely on specialized routing networks and training-time representations (hierarchical compression/selection in NSA, block-level MoE gating in MoBA). Post-hoc application of block sparsity to dense models without retraining causes severe quality collapse. Consequently, SGLang gates NSA strictly to models natively trained with NSA (python/sglang/srt/layers/attention/nsa/), and vLLM does not support MoBA or NSA as general-purpose serving backends. Furthermore, both papers report microbenchmark kernel speedups (NSA: 9.0x forward on 8x A100 at 64k; MoBA: 6.5x at 1M in custom FlashAttention) or synthetic retrieval (64k NIAH, 128K RULER 0.7818 vs 0.7849), with a verified absence of end-to-end serving benchmarks (tok/s, TTFT, P99 ITL) under realistic multi-user 128K traffic.
Workaround
Only deploy sparse attention for models pretrained end-to-end with the sparse architecture. For dense models at 128K, use KV cache quantization (FP8 KV) and chunked prefill rather than post-hoc sparse attention. Acknowledge the empirical gap: treat published 6.5x-11.6x speedup figures as isolated attention kernel bounds, not serving capacity gains.
notes
A VERIFIED NEGATIVE: In the literature introducing Native Sparse Attention (arXiv:2502.11089, [[nsa-native-sparse]]) and MoBA (arXiv:2502.13189, [[moba]]), neither paper publishes 128K serving throughput or TTFT under production serving traffic. NSA's empirical benchmarks stop at 64k (65,536 tokens on 8x A100), where it reports 9.0x forward / 6.0x backward kernel speedup and 11.6x decode memory access reduction. MoBA evaluates RULER at 128K (0.7818 vs 0.7849 for Full Attention at 62.5% sparsity with block size 4096 and top-k=12) and prefill speedup up to 6.5x at 1M and 16x at 10M, but publishes no serving throughput or decode latency numbers under multi-tenant serving workloads. In production inference engines, SGLang implements dedicated Triton/TileLang kernels for NSA gated exclusively on native checkpoints, while vLLM provides no automatic drop-in sparse attention path for standard dense models.
