Problem
Run-to-completion processing of LLM requests causes head-of-line blocking: one long request stalls everything behind it, so latency is high even when aggregate throughput is fine.
Mechanism
FastServe exploits the autoregressive pattern to make preemption possible at the granularity of each output token, rather than only at request boundaries. Scheduling uses a skip-join multi-level feedback queue: in the paper's 'semi-information-agnostic' setting, only input length is known at arrival, so each arriving job is assigned an initial queue and higher-priority queues are SKIPPED rather than joined, cutting demotions. Adds GPU memory management that proactively offloads and uploads intermediate state to host memory.
Speedup reported
Per the arXiv abstract, versus vLLM: up to 31.4x higher throughput and 17.9x higher throughput under the same average and tail latency requirements respectively. CRITICAL CAVEAT: the 31.4x figure is measured against vLLM under run-to-completion-style configurations and is a single-workload best case, not a general speedup — vLLM's own PagedAttention landed in the same period. Treat this number as 'the gap between two 2023 pre-PagedAttention-defaults engines under latency constraints', not as a durable 3-10x advantage over modern vLLM.
notes
Venue NOT verified — arXiv only, no venue in the comment field, and I did not find a proceedings page. Recorded as arxiv-preprint deliberately. Do not confuse with 'FastServe: Fast Multi-Model Inference with Anthropic', a different paper. Notably, this is the same group (Yinmin Zhong, Peking University) that later wrote DistServe; the two papers form a decade-scale thread from run-to-completion to phase disaggregation. VENUE_TRACK BACKFILL 2026-10-04 (paper-fields pass, agent w3p): venue_track 'unknown'. `venue` is 'arxiv-preprint', which means no peer-reviewed venue has been established for this work as of the verification date, so the track genuinely is not known. 'unknown' is used here rather than leaving the field null or guessing 'main': the schema separates 'unknown' from 'main' precisely so that an unprereviewed preprint is not silently counted as main-track work. This annotation is what lets a downstream filter distinguish 'peer reviewed, main track' from 'not peer reviewed' without inferring it from the venue string.
