Problem
Standard self-attention uses O(n^2) time and space in sequence length, making long-sequence training and deployment prohibitively costly.
Mechanism
Exploit the empirical finding that the self-attention matrix can be APPROXIMATED BY A LOW-RANK matrix, then project keys and values onto a fixed number of learned sequence-length projections (k and v). The attention matrix therefore has rank at most k regardless of n, which reduces the complexity from O(n^2) to O(n) in both time and space. The projection length is a fixed hyperparameter, which is exactly the constraint that later work objects to.
Speedup reported
NOT A QUANTIFIED SPEEDUP. The abstract's claim is the complexity reduction (O(n^2) to O(n) in both time and space) plus 'performs on par with standard Transformer models, while being much more memory- and time-efficient'. No wall-clock multiple, no baseline implementation, no hardware. The complexity reduction is the durable claim; the 'much more efficient' phrasing is unquantified in the source and should not be turned into a number.
notes
arXiv ID 2006.04768 verified via abs-page citation_title/citation_date on 2026-10-03; title matches. venue=arxiv-preprint, and this is a venue that should NOT be upgraded by assumption: the arXiv comment field is empty, no journal_ref exists, and OpenReview search for the exact title returns only unrelated later papers (including 'Interactive Multi-Head Self-Attention with Linear Complexity', CoRR 2024, and 'LinFormer: A Linear-Based Lightweight Transformer Architecture' on a public-article record - different works). Linformer was never published at a conference as far as any primary source available this session shows. adoption=abandoned, verified rather than assumed: the official repo lucidrains/linformer (307 stars) was last pushed 2024-01-05 - over two years stale; no linformer path exists in vLLM's 8562-file tree, SGLang's tree, or transformers' model and cache modules. The concrete reason for abandonment is worth recording because it generalises: Linformer compresses the SEQUENCE dimension with a FIXED learned projection, which means the model is locked to one maximum sequence length and the compressed keys must be recomputed whenever the input length changes - fatal for a serving engine where request lengths vary per request and for prefix-cache reuse. Every linear-attention method that DID ship (mamba, mamba-2, kimi-linear, simple-linear-attention) uses a recurrent state or content-dependent gate instead of a fixed sequence projection. VENUE_TRACK BACKFILL 2026-10-04 (paper-fields pass, agent w3p): venue_track 'unknown'. `venue` is 'arxiv-preprint', which means no peer-reviewed venue has been established for this work as of the verification date, so the track genuinely is not known. 'unknown' is used here rather than leaving the field null or guessing 'main': the schema separates 'unknown' from 'main' precisely so that an unprereviewed preprint is not silently counted as main-track work. This annotation is what lets a downstream filter distinguish 'peer reviewed, main track' from 'not peer reviewed' without inferring it from the venue string.
