Problem
Post-training quantization of 100B+ parameter generative models: existing one-shot quantizers lose too much accuracy at 3-4 bits and cannot finish on a feasible compute budget.
Mechanism
Layer-by-layer weight quantization that rounds each weight to a grid using approximate second-order (OBS) information: for each linear layer compute the inverse Hessian of the layer inputs H = 2XX^T from calibration activations, Cholesky-factorize it, then walk columns in Cholesky order and greedily pick the rounding of each weight that minimises the layer-output error proxy sum_h (w_h - q_h)^2 / [H^-1]_hh, updating the remaining weights after each choice (the error-compensation step). Sequential-column blocking makes it O(n^3) but GPU-parallel across rows.
Speedup reported
Paper's own claim (abstract, no hardware named): 175B-parameter GPT models quantized to 3 or 4 bits per weight in ~4 GPU-hours, 'more than doubles the compression gains relative to previously-proposed one-shot quantization methods'; first time a 175B model runs generative inference inside a single GPU. QUALITY COST: described only as 'negligible accuracy degradation relative to the uncompressed baseline' in the abstract - the compression ratio is the load-bearing number, not a paired perplexity delta.
notes
SLUG RENAMED 2026-10-04 (parent agent): was 'gptq', colliding with the quantization record of the same id, which made every bare-slug cross-reference ambiguous. Inbound refs (['affects', 'scheme', 'supported_formats']) all mean the quantization record, so none needed repointing; papers are cited via `sources`, never by bare slug. arXiv ID 2210.17323 verified by fetching the /abs/ page (title meta matches); v2 2023-03-22. Venue: Semantic Scholar returns arXiv.org only and an OpenReview search for the exact title found no accepted-venue record, so this is recorded as arxiv-preprint - GPTQ was not published at a conference. Year is the arXiv v1 year (2022). The compression ratio (3-4 bit) is stated but the paired quality delta is NOT quantified in the abstract; the repo's quantization/gptq record carries the per-model perplexity numbers. arXiv ID and title verified by fetching https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.17323 and reading the citation_title meta tag on 2026-10-03. Venue and year from the Semantic Scholar graph API batch endpoint (paper/arXiv:2210.17323) unless the record's notes say otherwise. VENUE_TRACK BACKFILL 2026-10-04 (paper-fields pass, agent w3p): venue_track 'unknown'. `venue` is 'arxiv-preprint', which means no peer-reviewed venue has been established for this work as of the verification date, so the track genuinely is not known. 'unknown' is used here rather than leaving the field null or guessing 'main': the schema separates 'unknown' from 'main' precisely so that an unprereviewed preprint is not silently counted as main-track work. This annotation is what lets a downstream filter distinguish 'peer reviewed, main track' from 'not peer reviewed' without inferring it from the venue string.
