HIP runtime API README (ROCm/HIP)
Fields
sources/amd-hip-readmeNotes
HIP is the runtime API and kernel language underneath all ROCm work. Its own description: 'HIP is a C++ runtime API and kernel language for AMD GPUs. It allows developers to create portable applications by providing a programming interface that is similar to NVIDIA CUDA, making it straightforward to port existing NVIDIA CUDA code to run on AMD hardware.' The 'similar to NVIDIA CUDA' phrasing is the honest framing of the whole ROCm-native story: HIP is a CUDA-shaped API, not a CUDA-shaped implementation, and that shape is a direct consequence of targeting AMD hardware while inheriting NVIDIA's developer mindshare.
