Model
Llama 2 70B (MLPerf 'llama2-70b-99.9')
Methodology
PRECISION: NOT STATED BY THE SOURCE AND DELIBERATELY NOT GUESSED. The paired measurements.json for this benchmark gives weight_data_types 'fp16', starting_weights_filename 'Original Hugginface model weights', weight_transformations 'quantization, affine fusion', input_data_types 'int32'. That says the weights began fp16 and were quantized, but it never names the served numeric format - not FP8, not INT8. format_id is therefore null rather than a guess. AGGREGATE. MLPerf Inference v4.1 Offline, closed division, NVIDIA NON-POWER submission system H200-SXM-141GBx8_TRT (as opposed to the power-measured H200-SXM-141GBx8_TRT_MaxQ). Provenance: closed/NVIDIA/results/H200-SXM-141GBx8_TRT/llama2-70b-99.9/Offline/performance/run_1/mlperf_log_summary.txt. LoadGen: 'Tokens per second: 31302.7', 'Samples per second: 107.477'. Cross-checked on the same node for mixtral-8x7b Offline: 59022.3 tok/s non-power versus 48987.9 tok/s MaxQ, a 17.0% MaxQ shortfall against 19.3% for llama2-70b. NO POWER TRACE EXISTS FOR THIS RUN - it is a plain performance submission, so no watts can be stated for it and none are guessed. That absence is the reason this record is worth having: it is the control that shows the power-measured submission is not free, while NOT supporting the naive reading that the gap is a watt cap.

notes
THE MAXQ-vs-MAXP GAP IS 25262.1 -> 31302.7 tok/s, A 19.3% THROUGHPUT DIFFERENCE - AND IT IS NOT A WATT CAP. This is the most misreadable comparison in MLPerf and the evidence is in NVIDIA's own Makefile.power. The 'MaxQ' power state is a PER-HOSTNAME chain, and on the H100-SXM host (viking-cr-194) the branch sets NO power limit at all - its only line is the commented-out '#sudo cpupower --cpu all frequency-set --governor powersave'. Other branches DO set caps ('-pl 250' DGX Station A100, '-pl 275' DGX A100, '-pl 200' A100-PCIe, '-pl 300 # TODO: Find the right power limit for this one.' H100-PCIe), and several also call power/set_nvlink.sh 0, so on some hosts 'MaxQ' DISABLES NVLINK. Consequently MaxQ-vs-MaxP is a bundle of power AND interconnect state, not a controlled watt-cap experiment, and the throughput gap cannot be read as an efficiency curve. WHAT THIS RECORD IS FOR: it establishes that the power-measured submission is roughly 24% slower than the same node asked to go fast, which is the price of the number. If you are citing the 0.2299 J/token figure as production-achievable efficiency, you are citing an efficiency that came with a 19% throughput cost. WHAT IT CANNOT SHOW: the missing watt. With MaxQ at 5806.9 W and MaxP unpublished, the efficiency direction is UNKNOWN - MaxP might be more joules-efficient at 31302.7 tok/s, or much less. Anyone tempted to divide a hypothetical MaxP wattage by 31302.7 should note that the experiment required to answer this was never run and is not in the public results. ALSO NOTE THE SECOND CONFOUND: the MaxQ run has CLOCKS LOCKED at 1000 MHz via 'nvidia-smi -lgc 1000,1000' (Makefile.power, GPUCLK?=1000, comment '# nsys and nvprof locked clock frequency'); whether the MaxP run shares that lock is not established by the summary file. Part of the 19.3% may be the clock lock rather than the power state, and these records cannot separate the two.
