Notable features
IT DOES NOT RUN ANY MODEL. This is the defining fact and the reason it belongs in a knowledge base about inference engines: RouteLLM is a DECISION LAYER that sits in front of two or more existing endpoints and picks which one should answer a given query. It loads no weights and touches no GPU. The 'hardware it needs' answer is: whatever your upstream providers already needThe routing problem it solves is COST, not speed. Most requests do not need the strongest model; a router that recognises the easy ones and sends them to a cheaper model cuts spend without a quality collapse. That is a different optimisation target from every continuous-batching engine in this repoTwo deployment shapes, both genuinely useful: a drop-in replacement for an OpenAI client (you change your client construction and requests start routing), or an OpenAI-compatible server other clients can point at. The proxy mode is what makes it adoptable without touching application codeShips TRAINED ROUTERS OUT OF THE BOX - the 'mf' router is the default and the README's quickstart uses it - plus a framework for training and comparing your own across multiple benchmarks. Being both a usable default and a research platform is unusual for a niche toolAccompanies a real paper (arXiv 2406.18665) and an LMSYS blog post, so the approach is documented rather than folklore5568 stars and 441 forks - substantial adoption for a router, which tells you how much the cost-optimisation problem is felt. Hardware caveats
NO INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED PERFORMANCE. Every number in this record is a VENDOR CLAIM from the project's own README: 'reduce costs by up to 85% while maintaining 95% GPT-4 performance on MT Bench' and '>40% cheaper' than commercial routers. These are self-reported, measured against the authors' choice of benchmark, with a strong model baseline (gpt-4-1106-preview) and weak model (Mixtral-8x7B) chosen by the authors. Treat as an upper bound on the achievable saving, not an expectation. I found no third-party reproductionTHE REPO IS EFFECTIVELY DORMANT. Last push was 2024-08-10 - roughly two years before this record's date of 2026-10-04. It is NOT archived (so not formally deprecated) and has only 44 open issues, so it is not visibly rotting either. The accurate description is UNMAINTAINED-BUT-NOT-ABANDONED, which is a different and more ambiguous status than either extremeDORMANCY IS THE REAL RISK, NOT CODE QUALITY. The router is a small model reading prompts; nothing about it decays. What decays is provider compatibility: OpenAI model names and API surfaces move, the strong-model baseline moves, and a router trained against a 2024 distribution of queries may misroute on 2026 traffic. There is no evidence of retrainingIT IS A ROUTER, NOT A SERVER, so no scheduler capability exists: no continuous batching, no paged KV, no prefix caching. It adds a network hop and a classification step to every request, which is a LATENCY TAX on top of whatever your upstream does. The cost saving can be real while the latency regression is certainCost figures are entangled with pricing changes. An 85% saving against gpt-4-1106-preview and Mixtral-8x7B is partly a statement about 2024 model pricing, and those two endpoints have since been superseded. The experiment is not reproducible as statedNo GPU requirement at all, which is unusual for this knowledge base. Hardware cost is zero on the router itself and everything is in the upstreams
Best for
A workload with a long tail of easy prompts where a router can send most traffic to a small model - this is the canonical use case and the reason the project has 5568 starsCutting inference spend without a quality collapse you can measure against your own eval setTeams wanting to A/B router strategies across multiple benchmarks rather than trusting a vendor's routing claimRetrofitting cost control onto an existing app via OpenAI-compatible proxy mode, with minimal code change
Avoid for
Anything latency-sensitive: it is an extra network hop and a classifier call in front of every requestTrusting the headline percentages - they are the authors' own numbers with their own baseline and their own benchmark, and no independent reproduction is citedStarting a new project on it in 2026 without checking upstream provider compatibility, given no code changes since 2024-08-10Single-model deployments - there is nothing to route betweenWorkloads where quality variance is unacceptable: a misrouted hard prompt is a user-visible quality failure, and the 95%-of-GPT-4 framing is an average, not a worst case
notes
The clearest example in the repo of an inference-adjacent tool that does not infer: a cost-optimisation decision layer with no weights, no GPU and no scheduler. Recorded with status contested specifically because the compelling numbers are all self-reported. The README's 85% cost reduction at 95% of GPT-4 quality, and >40% cheaper than commercial routers, are recorded as VENDOR CLAIMS in the source, and I found no independent benchmark reproducing them. Second honest caveat: the last push was 2024-08-10, so this is dormant-but-not-deprecated rather than abandoned - a status worth distinguishing from [[text-generation-inference]] and [[niche-deepspeed-mii]], which are unambiguously finished. The transferable idea (route the easy 80% of traffic to a weak model, learn the boundary with a classifier) has been implemented inside several serving stacks, which is why the standalone repo went quiet.
