Problem
Streaming ASR with limited latency needs long-range context for accuracy but cannot afford full self-attention over unbounded history.
Mechanism
Splits the sequence into a limited hard-augmented memory bank, the left context, and the current block. The LEFT CONTEXT IS CACHED: K and V for left-context frames are computed once and reused across streaming steps, so attention cost is linear rather than quadratic in history length. Long-range history is additionally distilled into the memory bank so accuracy survives truncation.
Speedup reported
At average latency 960 ms on Librispeech: 2.50% WER test-clean, 5.62% test-other, with 4.6x training speedup and 18% relative RTF reduction versus the augmented memory transformer (AM-TRF) baseline, plus 17%/9% relative WER reduction. At 80 ms average latency: 3.01%/7.09% WER, a 9%/16% relative WER reduction versus an LSTM baseline of the same latency and model size. Baselines and the latency setting are both stated; GPU hardware is not given.

notes
ICASSP 2021, DOI 10.1109/ICASSP39728.2021.9414560 (confirmed via openalex). Two engineering lessons carried forward into every streaming encoder: (1) caching left-context K/V converts quadratic attention into linear cost and is the single biggest lever in a streaming ASR decoder; (2) the paper's own numbers show the latency/accuracy knob is first-class - the same model at 960 ms vs 80 ms trades roughly 0.5-1.5 WER points for a 12x latency cut, which is the tradeoff a serving engineer actually tunes. VENUE_TRACK BACKFILL 2026-10-04 (paper-fields pass, agent w3p): venue_track 'main'. This is STRUCTURAL rather than researched: icassp has no Findings volume and no workshop track in which a paper could appear, so 'main' is the only possible honest value and no per-paper evidence was needed. The field is annotated here so that 'findings' and 'workshop' remain MEANINGFUL - a filter for findings=true must return only the papers that actually are findings, which requires every other paper to be explicitly NOT findings.
