Problem
Extending a 4K-context model to 2M tokens by uniform positional interpolation needs non-uniform treatment of RoPE frequencies, and naive uniform scaling wastes short-context quality.
Mechanism
Non-uniform positional interpolation. Split RoPE dimensions into a high-frequency group and a low-frequency group; keep the high-frequency group close to the original (short) positions so local resolution is preserved, and apply aggressive interpolation to the low-frequency group where the long-range structure lives. Adds a progressive extension strategy: first fine-tune at 256k, then apply a SECOND positional interpolation to reach 2048k; and finally readjust LongRoPE at 8k to recover short-context performance. Only the positional embedding changes - architecture is untouched.
Speedup reported
NOT A THROUGHPUT CLAIM. The abstract's quantitative claims are about CONTEXT LENGTH and quality: an 8x extension in non-fine-tuning scenarios, and a 2048k context window via the two-stage progressive strategy, with models retaining the original architecture and reusing most pre-existing optimisations. The serving-relevant property is that reuse: because only the position encoding changes, no engine or kernel work is needed to deploy it.

arXiv ID 2402.13753 verified via abs-page meta tags on 2026-10-03; title matches. Venue icml verified twice: OpenReview returns venueid='ICML.cc/2024/Conference' with venue 'ICML 2024' for the exact title, and DBLP independently lists venue='ICML 2024'. CORRECTION TO THE SOURCE RECORD: pap-attn-longrope says 'arXiv preprint; no journal_ref' - wrong; the paper is ICML 2024. adoption=in-upstream-engine verified in source: transformers lists "longrope" in ROPE_INIT_FUNCTIONS (mapping to _compute_longrope_parameters) and special-cases rope_type in ['llama3','yarn','longrope']; vLLM ships Phi3LongRoPEScaledRotaryEmbedding (LongRoPE is the technique Phi-3-mini used) and imports LongRoPE from deepseek_scaling_rope. Two engines, both reference libraries. open_weights=true - LongRoPE is the position encoding of the released Phi-3-mini models. Note the naming collision risk with longrope2 in this same repo: different papers, different mechanisms (non-uniform frequency split vs evolutionary-search rescaling plus mixed-context training). VENUE_TRACK BACKFILL 2026-10-04 (paper-fields pass, agent w3p): venue_track 'main'. This is STRUCTURAL rather than researched: icml has no Findings volume and no workshop track in which a paper could appear, so 'main' is the only possible honest value and no per-paper evidence was needed. The field is annotated here so that 'findings' and 'workshop' remain MEANINGFUL - a filter for findings=true must return only the papers that actually are findings, which requires every other paper to be explicitly NOT findings.
