Break the Sequential Dependency of LLM Inference Using Lookahead Decoding

ADOPTION, precisely: llama.cpp and TensorRT-LLM both ship a lookahead-decoding path, and vLLM has supported it. The distinct selling point versus every other record in this sub-area is that it needs NO draft model and NO draft weights, so it applies to any checkpoint unmodified - the reason it survived when many paper-specific draft methods did not. HEADLINE-CLAIM TRAP, flagged deliberately: the 4x figure requires strong scaling across multiple GPUs. Quote the 1.8x single-device number for any single-accelerator comparison and say so explicitly, or this paper will be cited as evidence that lookahead decoding gives 4x on a single GPU, which it does not. VENUE NOTE: no venue verifiable via Semantic Scholar and the arXiv comment carries none, so venue = arxiv-preprint, year = ArXiv v1 (Feb 2024). DANGLING REF RESOLVED 2026-10-04 by reading the paper (arXiv:2402.02057v1, section 5 'Evaluation Results'). The paper ran on TWO different A100 configurations and says so: "S1 is equipped with NVIDIA A100 GPUs with 80GB of memory. On S1, the 7B, 13B, and 34B models are deployed on a single A100, while the 70B model utilizes 2 A100s" and "S2 is a DGX machine with 8 NVIDIA A100 GPUs with 40GB memory and NVLink". Source: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2402.02057 . This is NOT a case of one paper one card: the single 'nvidia-a100-sxm' value was wrong in shape, not just in spelling, so both A100 records it actually used are listed instead of picking one. The 40 GB setup is explicitly a DGX with NVLink, i.e. the SXM module form.
AFFILIATIONS BACKFILLED 2026-10-04 (paper-fields pass, agent w3p): PDF footnote: '1UCSD 2Google 3UC Berkeley. Correspondence to: Hao Zhang', matching author order Fu/Bailis/Stoica/Zhang. OpenAlex returns none. Filled from the API/PDF rather than from memory, because an affiliation is a fact about a specific paper's author block and inference from the author's employer history is how wrong affiliations get shipped.
VENUE (+YEAR) CORRECTION AND VENUE_TRACK 2026-10-04 (paper-fields pass, agent w3p): venue 'arxiv-preprint' -> 'icml', venue_track 'main'. EVIDENCE: PMLR v235 (ICML 2024) table of contents contains 'Break the Sequential Dependency of LLM Inference Using Lookahead Decoding' verbatim. BOTH VALUES RETAINED per the repo contract: the prior value was 'arxiv-preprint'. status set to contested because this changes a peer-reviewed attribution. Method note: OpenReview's api2 hard-429s under load and pre-2024 venues are unreachable through it, so these were verified against static proceedings indexes (proceedings.mlr.press for ICML, proceedings.mlsys.org for MLSys) rather than the OpenReview API.
2026-10-10: PMLR v235 ICML 2024 proceedings (idx2.py: https://proceedings.mlr.press/v235/) confirms "Break the Sequential Dependency of LLM Inference Using Lookahead Decoding" (Fu et al.). arXiv API 2402.02057 (axc.py) verified. Source pap-eff-lookahead-decoding notes cite arXiv preprint vs PMLR v235 ICML 2024. Sources disagree; status remains contested.
