Problem
Every KV-cache compression method allocates the SAME budget to every layer, which contradicts how transformers actually route information through depth.
Mechanism
The observation is Pyramidal Information Funneling: attention is scattered and diffuse in LOWER layers, progressively consolidates into specific contexts in middle layers, and focuses on a few critical tokens (massive activations / attention sinks) in HIGHER layers. PyramidKV therefore allocates a PYRAMIDAL budget - more cache in lower layers, less in higher ones - rather than a uniform one.
Speedup reported
Paper's own claims (abstract), reported as quality-at-budget rather than as a speedup: matches full-KV-cache performance while retaining only 12% of the KV cache (LongBench); in memory-focused settings retaining 0.7% of the KV cache it beats other compression methods by up to 20.5 absolute accuracy points on TREC; and with just 128 retained KV entries LLAMA-3-70B reaches 100.0 accuracy on needle-in-a-haystack. The 12%-of-cache figure is a MEMORY reduction with a quality floor - the serving consequence is batch size, not tok/s.

arXiv ID 2406.02069 verified via abs-page citation_title/citation_date on 2026-10-03; title matches. VENUE CORRECTED - the dead agent was likely to record arxiv-preprint, and the arXiv comment field is indeed empty. OpenReview shows BOTH outcomes for this paper: forum with venue='Submitted to ICLR 2025', venueid='ICLR.cc/2025/Conference/Rejected_Submission', and a different forum with venue='COLM 2025', venueid='colmweb.org/COLM/2025/Conference'. The accepted venue is COLM 2025. venue=colm, year=2025. This is the third paper in this batch (after mamba and retnet) whose commonly-cited venue would have been wrong; the pattern is that arXiv comment fields are not a reliable venue source and OpenReview venueid is. DEDUP CHECK: the source note says a quantization record exists under the bare id 'pyramidkv' - verified, data/quantization/pyramidkv.json exists, different record type, no duplicate paper, nothing deleted. adoption=research-only: the paper's budget-allocation idea is a per-layer configuration choice that an engine could honour, but no engine implements a pyramidal KV budget (checked vLLM v1 cache layer, SGLang, transformers cache_utils.py - 24 cache classes, none per-layer-budget). VENUE_TRACK BACKFILL 2026-10-04 (paper-fields pass, agent w3p): venue_track 'main'. This is STRUCTURAL rather than researched: colm has no Findings volume and no workshop track in which a paper could appear, so 'main' is the only possible honest value and no per-paper evidence was needed. The field is annotated here so that 'findings' and 'workshop' remain MEANINGFUL - a filter for findings=true must return only the papers that actually are findings, which requires every other paper to be explicitly NOT findings.
