Problem
Post-hoc sparsification needs extra sparse data structures and gives constrained speedup on current hardware, because irregular sparsity is not what accelerators accelerate.
Mechanism
Uses the transformer's COMPUTATIONAL INVARIANCE - the model output does not depend on the choice of basis for the residual stream - to replace each weight matrix with a SMALLER DENSE matrix, literally deleting whole ROWS AND COLUMNS and thereby reducing the model's embedding dimension. No sparse data structures, no custom kernels, no irregular access: the result is an ordinary dense model that is simply narrower.
Speedup reported
Paper's own claim (abstract): removes up to 25% of model parameters INCLUDING EMBEDDINGS for LLAMA2-70B, OPT-66B and Phi-2 while maintaining 99%, 99% and 90% zero-shot performance of the dense model respectively. COMPRESSION RATIO: up to 25% parameter removal (1.33x); the asymmetry matters - Phi-2 retains only 90%, so this is NOT uniformly near-lossless across models. Speedup: 'run on fewer GPUs and run faster without any additional code optimization' - total inference compute for LLAMA2-70B reduced to 64% on 24GB consumer GPUs and 66% on 40GB A100s. Both reductions are ~1.5x, not 1.33x, because removing the embedding dimension also shrinks every matmul.
notes
arXiv ID 2401.15024 verified via /abs/; venue ICLR 2024 confirmed by the arXiv comment field ('accepted at ICLR24') and Semantic Scholar; year = venue year 2024. The '90% of dense zero-shot performance' figure for Phi-2 is the honest counterweight to the 99% figures and is recorded so the 99% does not read as universal. hardware_relevance names RTX 4090 as the 24GB consumer part matching the paper's stated class; the paper says '40GB A100' and the repo's A100 records are 80GB parts, which is noted rather than papered over. arXiv ID and title verified by fetching https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.15024 and reading the citation_title meta tag on 2026-10-03. Venue and year from the Semantic Scholar graph API batch endpoint (paper/arXiv:2401.15024) unless the record's notes say otherwise. VENUE_TRACK BACKFILL 2026-10-04 (paper-fields pass, agent w3p): venue_track 'main'. This is STRUCTURAL rather than researched: iclr has no Findings volume and no workshop track in which a paper could appear, so 'main' is the only possible honest value and no per-paper evidence was needed. The field is annotated here so that 'findings' and 'workshop' remain MEANINGFUL - a filter for findings=true must return only the papers that actually are findings, which requires every other paper to be explicitly NOT findings.
