Problem
A single LLM serving request has two phases with opposite bottlenecks — prompt computation is compute-bound and memory-bound prompt processing is bandwidth-bound — so running both on the same device wastes one of the two resources.
Mechanism
Characterise the two phases and split them across different devices: prompt computation is run on a compute-dense accelerator and the memory-bandwidth-bound decode loop on a bandwidth-dense one, inside one in-flight request. Compute- and memory-optimised phases then proceed concurrently instead of alternating.
Speedup reported
Per the arXiv abstract: 1.4x higher throughput at 20% lower cost than current designs, OR alternatively 2.35x more throughput at the same cost and power budgets. Two distinct cluster configurations (same machine type vs different machine types per phase), optimised for throughput, cost, and power as three separate objectives. Baseline is described in the paper as 'current designs'; the 1.4x/2.35x pair are two different cluster configurations, not two measurements of one.
notes
arXiv comment has NO venue, so venue rests entirely on the Crossref ISCA '24 DOI (10.1109/isca59077.2024.00019). Beware: a second DOI, 10.1109/mm.2025.3575361, is an IEEE Micro MAGAZINE article of the same title — do not cite that as the conference paper. Adoption research-only: no released system, no production lineage. DUPLICATE COVERAGE WARNING: another agent's record with a different slug covers the same paper ('splitwise-prefill-decode-disaggregation', arXiv 2311.18677, sources flop2-splitwise). This record is the verified one: its venue is confirmed against a proceedings/DOI/OpenReview source, whereas that record lists the venue as arxiv-preprint, i.e. unverified. The two should be merged or one deleted by whoever owns the merge; I did not delete the other record because it is outside my write scope. VENUE_TRACK BACKFILL 2026-10-04 (paper-fields pass, agent w3p): venue_track 'main'. This is STRUCTURAL rather than researched: isca has no Findings volume and no workshop track in which a paper could appear, so 'main' is the only possible honest value and no per-paper evidence was needed. The field is annotated here so that 'findings' and 'workshop' remain MEANINGFUL - a filter for findings=true must return only the papers that actually are findings, which requires every other paper to be explicitly NOT findings. DUPLICATE-SLUG-CONSOLIDATION-2026-10-05 (agent w6-papers). data/papers/splitwise.json and data/papers/splitwise-prefill-decode-disaggregation.json were BOTH live records for arXiv 2311.18677 (Splitwise: Efficient generative LLM inference using phase splitting), so one paper appeared twice under two slugs and - where the records disagreed - under two different venues. splitwise-prefill-decode-disaggregation.json has been merged into this record and removed. IDENTIFICATION IS BY ARXIV ID, RE-FETCHED NOT ASSUMED: the arXiv API returns one entry for 2311.18677 with this title and the author list [Pratyush Patel, Esha Choukse, Chaojie Zhang, Aashaka Shah, Íñigo Goiri, Saeed Maleki, Ricardo Bianchini, Rodrigo Fonseca], which both records were matching. Source w6p-arxiv-api-duplicate-id-confirmation. Venue evidence per record is in w6p-openreview-api2-duplicate-venue-records. Every arXiv id in this consolidation was taken from an API response rather than from memory or from the records, per the rule that this repo has shipped wrong ids twice. WHAT WAS CHECKED BEFORE REMOVING ANYTHING: every field of every data/**/*.json record was scanned for the string "splitwise-prefill-decode-disaggregation". Zero inbound references were found - no model, gotcha, source, engine or doc record pointed at it - so the merge breaks no reference. Papers are cited by SOURCE ID, never by slug, so no `sources` entry needed repointing; the retired record's source ids were folded into this record's `sources` so the evidence survives the merge. MERGED FIELD BY FIELD - nothing was silently dropped: mechanism: the retired record's text was materially fuller (556 chars vs 311) and is RETAINED here rather than discarded. Its text: Split the two phases of an inference request onto SEPARATE MACHINES so each runs on hardware suited to it, and provision resources independently per phase. The hard part is that splitting requires transferring the request STATE (the KV cache) from the prompt-computation machine to the token-generation machine, so state transfer is implemented and optimised over the FAST BACK-PLANE interconnect available in GPU clusters. Clusters are then designed with the same or different machine types for the two phases and optimised for throughput, cost, or power. speedup_reported: the two records carried DIFFERENT text for the same paper. This record's text is retained and the retired record's variant is quoted so the difference is visible: "1.4x higher throughput at 20% LOWER COST than current designs, OR alternatively 2.35x more throughput at the SAME cost and power budgets. Both figures are against 'current designs' (the paper's characterisation of pre-splitting serving systems), and the two are alternative operating points rather than cumulative - a reader must not multiply them." hardware_relevance UNION taken. This record listed A100 40GB SXM4, A100 80GB SXM4 and V100 SXM2 32GB; the retired twin listed H100 SXM, MI300X and A100 80GB SXM4. The sets are disjoint rather than contradictory, so all entries are kept - dropping either would have silently discarded hardware the paper names. The two records disagreed because they were written from different readings of one paper. AFFILIATIONS CORRECTED - arXiv HTML byline for 2311.18677v2 gives Pratyush Patel 'University of Washington' and the other six authors (Choukse, Zhang, Shah, Goiri, Maleki, Bianchini) 'Microsoft'. This record listed 'University of Washington', 'Microsoft Corporation' and 'xAI'; xAI appears NOWHERE on the paper and no author is at xAI. Microsoft Corporation and Microsoft are the same institution under two renderings, so the field lists the institution once. VENUE AND THE CLAIMS THAT COMPETED FOR IT: ISCA 2024 on both records - the one pair where the duplicate did NOT contradict itself on venue. The venue rests on the Crossref ISCA '24 DOI 10.1109/isca59077.2024.00019, container '2024 ACM/IEEE 51st Annual International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA)', event of the same name, issued 2024-06; the OpenReview DBLP mirror independently returns 'ISCA 2024' / dblp.org/conf/ISCA/2024. The companion trap, carried over from the retired record: a SECOND DOI exists for this title, 10.1109/mm.2025.3575361 in IEEE Micro, which is a 2025 magazine article and NOT the conference paper. A title-only search surfaces the magazine first, and the arXiv comment field ('12 pages, 19 figures') names no venue at all. STATUS: the contradiction this pair represented is now resolved, so the record is no longer marked contested on account of the duplicate. Fields were changed as stated above; arxiv_id is unchanged. SUPERSEDED EARLIER FLAG: this record previously carried a note beginning "DUPLICATE COVERAGE WARNING..." which flagged the slug-pair venue disagreement and explicitly deferred fixing it to a later pass. That deferral is discharged by this merge - the disagreement no longer exists because there is only one record.
