Problem
Ring Attention's contiguous per-device sequence split creates LOAD IMBALANCE under causal masking: early devices own fewer live tokens than late devices, so the slowest device determines throughput and the whole cluster idles at the end of every step.
Mechanism
A simple extension to Ring Attention: instead of contiguous subsequences, each device holds a STRIPE - a subset of tokens distributed UNIFORMLY THROUGHOUT the sequence. Because every device then owns a similar share of every contiguous region, the causal work per device is roughly equal and the pipeline stays balanced.
Speedup reported
Paper's own claims (abstract): up to 1.45x END-TO-END THROUGHPUT improvement over the original Ring Attention on causal transformer TRAINING at sequence length 256K on A100 GPUs and TPUv4s; and 1.65x on 16 TPUv4 chips at sequence length 786K. Hardware and sequence lengths both named. Training-side again, not inference-serving.
notes
arXiv ID 2311.09431 verified via abs-page citation_title/citation_date on 2026-10-03; title matches. venue=arxiv-preprint on evidence, with a specific trap documented: searching OpenReview for this title returns the RING ATTENTION paper's NeurIPS 2023 workshop entries ('Instruction Workshop @ NeurIPS 2023' and 'FMDM@NeurIPS2023', both titled 'Ring Attention with Blockwise Transformers') and NO record for Striped Attention itself - the shared authors make it easy to misattribute a venue. Striped Attention's arXiv comment says only 'Code: ...' and no venue was found. adoption=research-only: no ring or striped attention path in vLLM's 30-file v1 backend list, SGLang's attention directory, or transformers; and the same objection as for ring-attention applies - this addresses training-time causal load balance, which no inference engine needs because decode is KV-bandwidth-bound and served by paging. VENUE_TRACK BACKFILL 2026-10-04 (paper-fields pass, agent w3p): venue_track 'unknown'. `venue` is 'arxiv-preprint', which means no peer-reviewed venue has been established for this work as of the verification date, so the track genuinely is not known. 'unknown' is used here rather than leaving the field null or guessing 'main': the schema separates 'unknown' from 'main' precisely so that an unprereviewed preprint is not silently counted as main-track work. This annotation is what lets a downstream filter distinguish 'peer reviewed, main track' from 'not peer reviewed' without inferring it from the venue string.
