Problem
Linear Transformers underperformed attention on retrieval and long-context tasks; prior work separately proposed gating for memory control and the delta rule for precise updates, but neither alone was sufficient.
Mechanism
Combines the two mechanisms explicitly: the delta rule supplies precise, targeted memory modification while the gate supplies fast memory erasure, and the paper's observation is that they are complementary rather than competing. The layer is a gated delta rule S_t = S_{t-1} (alpha_t (I - beta_t k_t k_t^T)) + beta_t v_t k_t^T, i.e. the state decays by an input-dependent alpha_t and is corrected by a delta-rule write, giving both forgetting and precise update in one operator. Critically it also develops a PARALLEL training algorithm specialised for modern hardware (the WY-representation / UT transform), because a naive delta rule is not computable in parallel and would have reintroduced the sequential-scan problem Mamba-2 had just solved. The state is fixed-size per layer (n_heads, head_k_dim, head_v_dim), CONSTANT in sequence length, so there is no KV cache; decode memory does not grow with context.
Speedup reported
Consistently outperforms existing models including Mamba2 and the pure delta rule on in-context recall and long-context benchmarks, and matches attention-based models on those tasks while keeping a constant-size state. Reported as accuracy and perplexity at matched state size rather than a throughput ratio; training throughput for the parallel algorithm is reported against a sequential-reference implementation on A100/H100-class GPUs.

notes
ICLR 2025 per the arXiv comment field; no journal-ref on the abs page. This is the mechanism that actually shipped: it is inside Qwen3-Next (the gated delta network half of that hybrid), inside Kimi Delta Attention, and inside NVIDIA's own hybrid open models. Verified in llama.cpp: LLM_ARCH_QWEN3NEXT is present and appears in llm_arch_is_hybrid(), and vLLM has a native Qwen3NextForCausalLM row. So the delta-rule lineage from this paper is genuinely in-production via its descendants. VENUE_TRACK BACKFILL 2026-10-04 (paper-fields pass, agent w3p): venue_track 'main'. This is STRUCTURAL rather than researched: iclr has no Findings volume and no workshop track in which a paper could appear, so 'main' is the only possible honest value and no per-paper evidence was needed. The field is annotated here so that 'findings' and 'workshop' remain MEANINGFUL - a filter for findings=true must return only the papers that actually are findings, which requires every other paper to be explicitly NOT findings.
