Problem
Scaling MoE to hundreds of billions of parameters required hand-written expert-parallel sharding code, so no team could practically adopt sparse MoE.
Mechanism
Annotation-based automatic sharding with compiler annotations so a standard transformer containing MoE feed-forward sublayers can be partitioned across TPU pods with no hand-written sharding logic; the contraction is expressed so expert weights and expert activations shard along the same axis, so no all-to-all of weights is needed per step. Gating is top-2 with softmax-normalised top-2 weights. Load balance is an auxiliary loss N * sum_j f_j * P_j plus a z-loss. Tokens whose top-2 expert exceeds that expert's capacity are dropped, governed by capacity_factor; this token-dropping behaviour is exactly what MegaBlocks later removes. GShard established the sharded-MoE idiom later used by T5X and GSPMD. Active-vs-total for the flagship GShard model is roughly 600B total with about 100B active (about 1/6 sparse), routed top-2 of many experts plus capacity-limited dropping.
Speedup reported
No single speedup figure. The concrete claim is scale: sharded MoE models up to 600B parameters trained with the same per-device batch size and learning-rate schedule as dense T5 baselines, plus a reported 2-3x training speedup over a dense model of equal downstream quality on the SuperGLUE and transfer setups in the scaling section. That is a quality-matched rather than speed-matched comparison.

notes
ICLR 2021; venue per Semantic Scholar ('International Conference on Learning Representations'). The code_url given is the authors' MoE VAE repository, not a GShard implementation, and is indicative only. GShard's top-2 gating plus auxiliary loss is the direct ancestor that DeepSeekMoE names as its strawman baseline. VENUE_TRACK BACKFILL 2026-10-04 (paper-fields pass, agent w3p): venue_track 'main'. This is STRUCTURAL rather than researched: iclr has no Findings volume and no workshop track in which a paper could appear, so 'main' is the only possible honest value and no per-paper evidence was needed. The field is annotated here so that 'findings' and 'workshop' remain MEANINGFUL - a filter for findings=true must return only the papers that actually are findings, which requires every other paper to be explicitly NOT findings.
