Problem
A fixed-size embedding is either oversized for a cheap downstream task or too small for an accurate one, and the task is unknown at training time.
Mechanism
Trains a representation whose PREFIXES at different dimensionalities are each individually useful - an outer first layer for the largest size, with nested smaller representations inside. At inference you simply truncate the vector to the largest size the downstream budget tolerates, losing graceful accuracy. Zero additional inference cost: truncation is a slice.
Speedup reported
Up to 14x smaller embedding size at equal accuracy for ImageNet-1K classification, and up to 14x real-world retrieval speed-ups on ImageNet-1K and 4K; up to 2% accuracy improvement for long-tail few-shot classification. NOTE the baselines are independent low-dimensional representations of equal accuracy - the honest comparison, not a full-size model.

notes
Venue NeurIPS 2022 (crossref via NeurIPS Foundation, 'Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems'). The most directly exploitable trick in this whole slice for serving: dimensionality is a runtime knob. A 1024-dim vector truncated to 256 is 4x less bytes moved per query and 4x less index memory, with no retraining and no extra compute - which matters because embedding serving at batch 1 is memory-bound on both the index scan and the vector read. Used in production by the Nomic embedder family and widely adopted in VLM systems (nomic-vlm) as a way to shrink vision-side embeddings. VENUE_TRACK BACKFILL 2026-10-04 (paper-fields pass, agent w3p): venue_track 'main'. This is STRUCTURAL rather than researched: neurips has no Findings volume and no workshop track in which a paper could appear, so 'main' is the only possible honest value and no per-paper evidence was needed. The field is annotated here so that 'findings' and 'workshop' remain MEANINGFUL - a filter for findings=true must return only the papers that actually are findings, which requires every other paper to be explicitly NOT findings.
